Elizabeth (Lowell) Putnam, political activist, philanthropist, and pioneer in prenatal care, was born in Brookline, Massachusetts. One of five children of Katherine (Lawrence) and Augustus Lowell, she was the sister of the poet Amy Lowell and Harvard president Abbott Lawrence Lowell. Roger L. Putnam is most known for his service as Mayor of Springfield, Massachusetts from 1937 to 1943. After graduating from Harvard in 1915, and completing graduate work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he went to work for Package Machinery of Springfield.
